Let us lay in the sun and count every beautiful thing we can see
Marcel Duchamp
Fountain
Still on the topic of controversy, but straying away from sex and more towards change and reform of a society, Fountain is one of my favorite pieces of art and in one of my favorite times of Dada manifesto. This piece mocks and represents a change and the need for a difference in a pre-determined, authoritative society where one can not think for themselves. It takes art to the next level and allows people to laugh and be free with their own thoughts and ideas. This once controversial piece is revolutionary and eye popping. It is a recreation of an already existing item. It is a joke about life. And it is one of the contributors that allow this western society today. Controversy is intriguing, not dangerous.

Tom Ford ad-Mens Cologne
Lets get controversial…I want to talk about ad’s and how they relate to art. Art is a form of expression, even a rhetoric if you will. So when I think about all of the fine art that is created in this world and the amount of that fine art that is related to sex, it is uncountable. This ad and designer for that matter is one of my favorites because it proves that art and advertisements intermingle with each other and sometimes can give off the exact same message. In this case, it is saying “sex sells” and hey! I’ll buy it. Sex and nudity is a captivating idea and when artists and advertisers try to promote something in an artistic and sometimes sexual way, then hey, I have respect for them for understanding what the audience wants to see. It breaks through to the worlds psych and Freudian backgrounds. This is truly an amazing thing if you ask me.

“The Scream”-1893
Edvard Munch
The Frieze of Life
This painting is a part of a series from the expressionist art period that symbolizes love, fear, death, melancholia, and anxiety. “The Scream” has been described as a universal anxiety of the modern man. What is so amazing about this painting is that it speaks to each individual, no matter what culture or background or where you live, there is an intuitive meaning that this painting gives off which is why I enjoy this artist and this painting so much. From a post-modernism point of view, especially from the westernized ideations of the avant-garde’s, art is supposed to be separate and equal in it’s meaning for each individual’s perspective. This is interesting because this piece is still allowing the viewer to create his/her own opinion on the piece, but no matter who you are, you are going to feel a sense of anxiety in this picture. And that is so interesting to be able to make something so universally understood and mysterious at the same time.

Kevyn Aucoin
“Making Faces”-Book
Make-up Artist
I am writing one of my posts this week on Kevyn Aucoin because I did not get to present my “show & tell” last class because we ran out of time. I wanted to post this because Kevyn is who inspired me to keep my art going and aspiration to become a prominent make-up artist with my own make-up line. Kevyn is outstanding with make-up can takes his work to the next level by literally transforming his model’s face into whoever she/he would like to be. He isn’t just a make-up artist, but actually makes a person’s face into a work of art. It takes true talent to be able to contour someone’s face shape and bone structure to make it look entirely different. I wish the class could have seen more pictures from this book because it sure is a sight to see!

Chalk Art
Typography-Pinterest
This amazed me! It can be difficult for me to draw a straight line let alone free-hand typography, especially with chalk. I liked this photograph of this typography because the artist was actually working on the type in the picture, so you can almost envision her process while looking at the photo. This unlike the last post, is less business related and more artistically inclined. The thought of turning a simple word or quote in this into a piece of art is beautiful. It is turning the mundane into the exotic. Not only is the kind of art beautiful but I think it to be extraordinary for someone to dedicate their life to this form of artwork. This type of art should be shown more and more prominent in our growing society. We all need to add a little fun into our lives!

Packaging
Pinterest
This week I wanted to focus on the art of packaging and typography. This post being specifically about packaging. In this day of age, the world and the people that consume it are constantly moving faster than ever before with new technology and ways of thought. This being said, I think it is important for companies to keep up with the constant change so they do not get left behind. A way to integrate modernism into their companies in order to help them stand out among the crowd is packaging. Packaging alone is a form of art, but when companies become clever enough to incorporate true artistic design into their packaging with typography such as the picture above, that is what truly sets them apart from the rest. People often believe that artists can not function in the business world because it is over their heads, but this design proves wrong to all of the common beliefs that art and business do not mix. What are your thoughts about incorporating art into the business world to improve their success and corporate standing?

Coke Cake
Pinterest Recipes
Another great form of art that can be “fun” is baking. Baking is such an interesting way to express yourself. This cake is designed and made after coke cans. It is a red velvet cake with frosting that has been molded into a coke can. This kind of cake can be fun for any kind of party. But it takes real talent and a sense of art to be able to make this. Art is more than history sometimes. Sometimes it is about what you feel like in that moment of time and how you want to portray your feelings, in any kind of art form.

I wanted to write about fashion illustrations this week because I wanted to talk about art in a “fun” form. I am so tired of analyzing historical art pieces because of their meaning and their medium, their composition and their form. I think fashion illustration is a great form of art because it is so simple and it shows the true enjoyment that one can get out of doing a job because of their talent and passion. You can create anything and make any kind of outfit. I think it is great to have the power to be able to create something wearable from scratch from the use of your imagination.

Alexander Mcqeen
“Savage Beauty”
Because it is NYFW, I felt it necessary to write about one of my favorite creative designers. His book is not just about fashion, but it goes beyond the conventional use of clothing and into the greater depths of meaning. He gives life to his clothing with the use of politics, identity and culture. At times he is controversial. But I think that makes him all the more influential. Along with these aspects of his lines, he also is known for the extravagant and “theatrical” like creative aspects of his runway shows. He takes fashion to the next level and turns his clothing into pieces of art.

Tattoo & Fine Artist
Scott Campbell
“Strike Anywhere”
I wanted to write about tattoo artists this week. My favorite kind of art is the kind that makes its’ home on the body. What is better than using what God gave you to show your personality, style and being? Tattoos speak volumes. They tell stories and give meaning to the world that surrounds you. I respect Campbell as not only a tattoo artist, but also a overall great fine artist. He is unique and thinks outside the creative box to create the most interesting art pieces. In this specific piece, he uses gunpowder to create a 7-headed cobra. It’s composition is awesome and because it is burned onto the paper, it gives life to the cobra’s with it’s snake-skin feel.
